Over recent years, the desire and understanding of the term 'Organic' has increased dramatically. From shopping in your local supermarket, to the fabrics sold in clothes shops, the term Organic has spread across many aspects of our day to day lives.
Organic, when regarding food, clothing, Essential Oils and many more products, usually refers to Organic Farming - the way the product has been grown and produced. To be qualified as Organic, the producer must meet the general standards of Organic Farming. Standards do vary worldwide, but Organic Farming in general features practices that strive to cycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.
Organisations that regulate organic products may restrict the use of certain pesticides and fertilizers in farming. They can also require products not to be processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or synthetics. Currently, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and many other countries require producers to obtain special certification in order to market products as organic within their borders. In the context of these regulations, organics are produced in a way that complies with organic standards set by regional organizations, national governments and international organizations.
Requirements do vary from country to country, but all generally involve a set of production standards for growing, storage, processing, packaging and shipping that include: avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives), irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge; avoidance of genetically modified seed; use of farmland that has been free from prohibited chemical inputs for a number of years (often three or more) and maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products;
In the United Kingdom, organic certification is handled by a number of organizations, regulated by The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), of which the largest are the Soil Association and Organic Farmers and Growers.
